The Black Moods – Band Bio

Josh Kennedy – vocals and guitar
Chico Diaz – drums
Brenden McBride – bass

The Black Moods are amplifying Arizona’s rock legacy by carving a distinct path through modern rock with a sound that’s raw, melodic and unapologetically electric.

A power trio in the truest sense, the band — Josh Kennedy (vocals/guitar), Chico Diaz (drums) and Brenden McBride (bass) — channels the spirit of classic rock while injecting it with contemporary urgency, creating music that’s both timeless and fiercely alive.

Their journey began in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona but quickly expanded to stages across North America, where they have shared bills with Whitesnake, Godsmack, Gin Blossoms, and Robbie Krieger of The Doors.

The Black Moods proved early on that their sound could hold its own alongside rock royalty. But it wasn’t just their musicianship that turned heads — it was their chemistry, their grit, and their ability to turn every show into a communal catharsis.

Origins and evolution
Before The Black Moods officially formed in 2012, Kennedy and Diaz played together in Chalmers Green, a Missouri-based band that laid the groundwork for their musical partnership.

Kennedy, originally from Wheaton, Missouri, grew up steeped in the sounds of Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and Creedence Clearwater Revival, later blending those influences with the melodic sensibilities of ’90s alt-rock icons like Counting Crows and Better Than Ezra. That fusion — vintage soul with modern edge — would become the hallmark of The Black Moods’ sonic identity.

Their self-titled debut album, “The Black Moods” (2012), introduced audiences to their guitar-driven ethos. But it was their 2016 follow-up, “Medicine,” that began to solidify their place in the rock landscape. With tracks like “Say It for the Last Time” and “Someone To Save Us,” the band showcased a deeper emotional range, pairing anthemic choruses with introspective lyrics.

Live energy and legacy
Known for their electrifying live shows, The Black Moods deliver performances that are equal parts precision and passion. Kennedy’s guitar solos are fiery and fluid, Diaz’s drumming is relentless, and McBride’s bass anchors the chaos with groove and grace. Whether headlining a packed club or opening for arena acts, they command attention — and earn it.
